Spend a Chill Sunday in Chiang Mai with Me

Chiang Mai never fails to surprise me. Even after 6 months combined here – 3 in 2022, and 3 in 2024 – I still keep finding beautiful temples and cute cafés to visit. If you have a Sunday to spare and want to feel like a local in the town, spend an afternoon with me in the charming old town of Chiang Mai! (It was supposed to be an entire day, but it ended up only starting at noon, so…)

Morning: Start with Brunch at Zhong Cafe

My day began at Zhong Cafe, a cute place with a retro-modern aesthetic. With some vintage and artsy decorations, this cafe offers a perfect combination of delicious food and calming ambiance. I opted for their signature avocado toast and my usual iced americano (girl gotta get her caffeine). The perfect spot to fill up for the day while people-watching and flipping through a good book.

1PM: Meditate at Wat Chiang Man

Next, I headed to Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. It was not my initial plan, I just decided to take a longer walk and found the front of this temple interesting. The old town of Chiang Mai is filled with beautiful places like this! Besides the amazing details in the decorations, inside and outside, this one has extras surprises: an amazing elephant monument in the backyard. In addition, a small temple guarded by dragons stands on columns over a pond. Take your time and enjoy a moment of mindfulness, you are in Thailand after all!

2PM: Sweet Treat at Khom Chocolat

By midday, I was ready for a sweet pick-me-up, because dieting on Sundays is against my believes. (I totally understand if it is not your thing, or if you prefer to stay away from sugar) . So, I made my way to Khom Chocolat. This artisan chocolate cafe is heaven for chocolate lovers. I treated myself to their Belgian chocolate mousse. There were also many kids around, because they offer great chocolate drinks – so this is a good place to check if you have little ones with you.

Afternoon: Coffee and Creativity at Carrot Coffee

Now refueled, I made my way to Carrot Coffee. This cafe is perfect for those who appreciate a creative twist. They have many original and delicious drinks, besides all the carrot themed pastry. I spent a relaxing hour here, enjoying the eclectic decor and soaking up the cozy vibes. Some people were working on their computers as well. It’s the kind of place that inspires creative thoughts.

3PM: Explore Kalm Village

A short stroll later, I found myself at Kalm Village, a cultural space that blends modern design with traditional Lanna architecture. It’s a haven for anyone interested in local crafts and contemporary art. I wandered through their exhibitions and browsed the beautifully curated shop, which features handmade textiles and ceramics by local artists. Kalm Village is a perfect reminder of Chiang Mai’s rich cultural heritage and artistic spirit.

Talking about having a chill Sunday…

Sunset: Relax at Buak Hard Public Park

As the sun began to dip, I headed to Buak Hard Public Park (often called Buak Park). This green space is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Every morning and sunset you will find people doing yoga, jogging, or just enjoying the space. It is so beautifully designed, you will want to come here every time!

Amazing sunset time at the park

Evening: Stroll Through the Sunday Walking Street

No Sunday in Chiang Mai would be complete without a visit to the Sunday Walking Street. This market takes over Ratchadamnoen Road, transforming it into a bustling hub of food, art, and crafts. I meandered through the stalls, sampling local snacks like mango sticky rice and coconut pancakes (I am a vegetarian). The options are endless! There are so many stalls, and also so many people to be fair. Be patient with the crowd, collect your food and enjoy it in a calmier spot. The market’s vibrant energy was the perfect way to end my day.

Wrap-Up

The city invites you to slow down and savor each moment. If you try out this itinerary, let me know your favorite part—I’d love to hear about your experience!
